The Encyclopedia of Alabama is a free online reference source of all things Alabama, from history to geography to sports to education to sciences to business. It is written specifically for us by scholars and experts in the fields in which the articles are about and we have more than 1,500 articles for people to read right now and we add new content every week.

In the beginning of the century, the year 2000-2001, people decided that they needed to update the printed version of what had been used as an encyclopedia. It was printed in 1921 and it needed to be updated. So the University of Alabama Press and the Alabama Humanities Foundation said, "We need a new one," and they decided to put it online because it was the 21st century, and it's proven to be a very brilliant decision because we can update articles and add new content regularly.
